Radon is a radioactive gas released naturally from rocks and soil. You cannot see or smell it. It can accumulate indoors, and long-term exposure increases lung cancer risk. Measuring your home is the way to find out your level.

Start with official UKradon area information, then measure the property if testing is recommended. A map estimates the likelihood of elevated radon; it cannot tell you the concentration inside an individual home.

UKHSA recommends reducing radon in homes where the average is above the domestic Action Level of 200 Bq/m³. The Target Level, the ideal outcome for reduction work, is 100 Bq/m³. If a result is between those levels, UKHSA says reduction should be considered, especially if a smoker or ex-smoker lives there. These refer to an annual average, not a single short-term reading.

Yes. Options include a radon sump and suitable ventilation measures. The right approach depends on your measured level and the building’s construction. Retest after installation to check the outcome; a particular reduction cannot be guaranteed before assessment.
